A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS

Chinese Martial Arts, commonly called Kung Fu, Kuo Shu or Wu Shu are as old as the cultural heritage of China itself.  They have been in existence for over 5000 years.  In ancient times, in order to survive, the Chinese had to hunt, defend themselves from other tribes,  and protect themselves from fierce wild animals.  Through necessity, they slowly developed simple movements of punching and kicking, and used simple weapons, such as the staff.

During the wars between the tribes, the Chinese martial art techniques were developed and refined.  For long distance, the warrior used the bow and arrow and various throwing weapons,.  At close range they used the long spear, staff, knife and sword.  Many times they fought more than one opponent at a time.  Sometimes their weapons were broken, and they would fight against their opponents weapons with bare hands.  Because of many wars, the techniques of the martial arts were perfected.  The experience and heritage of these techniques are being passed down from generation to generation, to man and woman alike, by men such as Dr. Leung Kay Chi.
